Odette has a list: Things That Aren’t Fair. At the top of the list is her parents’ decision to take the family on the road in an ugly RV they’ve nicknamed the Coach. There’s nothing fair about leaving California and living in the Coach with her parents and exasperating brother. And there’s definitely nothing fair about Grandma Sissy’s failing health, and the painful realities and difficult decisions that come with it. Most days it seems as if everything in Odette’s life is far from fair but does it have to be?

With warmth and sensitivity Elana Arnold makes difficult topics such as terminal illness and the right to die accessible to young readers and apt for discussion.

3 Reasons You Should Read

Far from Fair by Elana K. Arnold

  • Alright, we know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but come on. LOOK AT IT! It’s gorgeous, and admittedly it was the first thing that drew us to this title. What we found inside was a bonus!
  • These pages are full of real-life situations in a middle grade age appropriate presentation. This book touches on so many family and personal problems. Sick family members, financial struggle, autism, marital problems, and more. You would think this would be overwhelming, but Far From Fair does a great job of presenting these topics in a perfect package for middle graders.
  • One of the best parts about Elana K. Arnold’s writing is that even when she’s taking on a tough topic she allows the reader to explore their own feelings and come to their own conclusion. Her characters are flawed and easy to relate to. Through her characters, she allows readers of all ages to explore their emotions without being told how to feel. We absolutely love that!
