“Aerity…” Her father paused as if the words he was forming pained him. “I must ask you to sacrifice the promise of love for the sake of our kingdom.”

She could only stare back, frozen.

When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity knows her duty to the kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger…until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

The 411:

The land of Lochlanach is being plagued by a terrible beast. No average soldier can best the beast so the king sends out a proclamation to all hunters of Eurona. Kill the beast. Win the girl…or princess that is. So begins The Great Hunt for the terrible beast.

What We Loved:

  • First off, this book has a kickass first chapter. We don’t think one could read that without being compelled to read further. Definitely one of the best first chapters we’ve read this year.
  • Princess Aerity shows strength and loyalty to her family in a time when it is needed most. She actually seems quite put together for a girl who has just been told she will have no say in who she marries. Her hotheaded little sister came across more upset about the marriage arrangement than she was.
  • We loved the magic in this book too. To be magic but being cursed with lashes that all can see, therefore the people with magic can either not use their magic at all to keep the lashes away, or they can use it and be looked down upon by all of those without the magic.

Um...Not So Much:

  • Love at first sight is always a sweet thing, but being eye humped is not. Not for a first time meeting anyway, which is what happens when Aerity meets the hunter that has caught her eye.
  • OMG…the end…It basically had us shaking my head because uuuuuggggghh. We were not happy about the way the book left off but there are some things we are really looking forward to in the next book.

Bottom Line:

With one of the best first chapters we’ve read this year, The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins is worth checking out.
