You will be punished…

Celestine North lives a perfect life. She’s a model daughter and sister, she’s well-liked by her classmates and teachers, and she’s dating the impossibly charming Art Crevan.

But then Celestine encounters a situation where she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces life-changing repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found flawed.

In her breathtaking young adult debut, bestselling author Cecelia Ahern depicts a society where perfection is paramount and flaws lead to punishment. And where one young woman decides to take a stand that could cost her everything.

***INTERVIEW***

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, Celestine. We’ll get right to it Do you consider yourself a rule-breaker?

No I don’t consider myself a rule breaker, I’m a bit of a goody two shoes when it comes to actual legal laws. I’d never break them. However when it comes to society’s rules, I think people should find their own path, we are all different, think differently and we should find our own ways of doing things, as long as we’re not hurting anybody else. Kindness is key. I think that our society has lost its compassion and instead of hardening our hearts to people who are different and creating division, empathy could bring us all together. Empathy can lead to compromise and understanding.

*nods* You landed in hot water after you stood up for a Flawed man on a bus. Why did you do that?

He was an old man who reminded me of my granddad. He was coughing, he needed help and the seats that were designated for him were being sat in by two non flawed. It simply wasn’t fair. It felt wrong. It hurt my heart, it frustrated and confused me. Why was nobody else reacting? Was the old man invisible? No person should ever be invisible. It was illogical. I saw a problem and knew the solution. Simple as that.

It was very intense. Would you change what you did that day?

Never. It may have shattered my world but it was put together again the way it should be, and I am a better person for it.

Definitely. How have your views on society and particularly the Flawed court changed since that fateful day?

I used to be their greatest supporter. I believed that their rules helped society, that what they were doing was a positive thing to protect our country from economic recession, and mayhem. But now I realise though they were trying to help us, the Guild were going about in the wrong way. They were addicted to their power, and they abused their power for their own gain. They went above their station and removed people who were threats; those who were not a threat to society but a threat to the Guild’s positions.

What do you wish the rest of society knew about The Flawed?

They are right. We are different to them.

We’ve made mistakes and have suffered for those mistakes and because of that, we’ve learned. As a result we are wiser, we have a clearer understanding of ourselves, we have evolved, and are stronger better versions of ourselves. To err is human. To be human is to be Flawed.

So true. Thanks again for stopping by today, Celestine.
