***Character Interview***
Today we’re sitting down with Emma and Henri from A Map for Wrecked Girls. Hi, ladies! Welcome to Swoony Boys Podcast! We can’t wait for our readers to get to know you both a little better. Ready to get started? Let’s do this…
Emma: This book isn’t a movie yet—not until next year—but Merricat and Constance Blackwood in Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle.
Henri: We were not that bad!
Emma: Well, close. Before at least. Maybe now we’re more like Rose and Maggie in In Her Shoes. That’s a book and a movie, too. Like Maggie and Rose we’ve some differences that led to us hurting each other, but our relationship is more important than anything we’ve done to each other in the past.
Emma: We both did a bang-up job of lying to ourselves and to each other when it came to our romantic relationships. We’re both working on that. About Mom and Dad . . . what do you think, Henri?
Henri: I see my parents differently now. They’re not the perfect people I thought they were when I was a kid, and that part is a little sad.
Emma: But maybe everyone has that happen—a point where you see your parents as real people with flaws but also people with their own hopes and dreams too. I guess it is disappointing, but I think it’s for the best.
Henri: What about us, our relationship?
Emma: Us? We did a number on each other, and while we’re still close, it’s different. More realistic. Because of that, I wouldn’t change anything.
Henri: I wouldn’t either.
Henri: Emma is brave, caring, and resilient.
Emma: Smart, you’re definitely smart, Henri. Stubborn, which can be both a good and bad thing. And . . . I don’t know.
Henri: Selfish. It’s okay—you can say it because it’s true. But I’m working on it.
Emma: With the mistake I made, some people might think it was for the best, but I did it for all the wrong reasons and in the worst possible way. I guess my advice is to think about why you’re doing whatever you’re doing. If you do everything for the right reasons, I really do believe it will all work out.
Henri: When things got bad, I lost track of the big picture and it felt like everything would always be that way. I had to remember that what I was experiencing—even though it was very real and painful—it wasn’t going to last forever. I remind myself of that when things get bad now.
Emma: Getting a little off topic, Henri.
Henri: Okay, fine. Third, a tent. No, make that three individual tents for privacy. Oh, and fourth and fifth, music and books. Anything to kill the suffocating boredom.
Emma: I would bring a fire starter, a machete for cutting vines and branches in the jungle, antibiotics, a water purifier, and toilet paper.
Emma: Only one last thing from me—we’re so grateful to everyone for reading our story! Thank you!
Henri: I’ve got one more piece of advice. If you’re getting on a boat, let someone know where you’re going.

Jessica Taylor adores atmospheric settings, dangerous girls, and characters who sneak out late at night. She lives in Northern California, not far from San Francisco, with a law degree she isn’t using, one dog, and many teetering towers of books.

I used to love camping but got to the point I packed way more than I should. You know, just in case. I think if I was stranded on an island I would go nuts because I was unprepared.
I can’t wait to read A Map for Wrecked Girls! Relationships between siblings are so fascinating and complicated and different – this character interview definitely got me even more intrigued to read the book.
I love the humor in the character interview. The Wrecked Girls is definitely on my TBR list.
