No one is unbreakable.

All Magnolia Vickers has ever wanted was to follow father’s path as head of the Family Business. But new legislation is poised to destroy the Family’s operations in the black-market organ trade and Maggie’s recent behavior has wrecked the business-savvy reputation she’s worked her whole life to build.

She’s given an ultimatum: shape up or step aside.

Then Maggie messes up: she downloads a virus onto her father’s computer, and must sneak it off-estate for repair. When Alex, a tech whiz, uncovers the type of information on the machine, he offers Maggie a choice: her Family can give him a kidney, or he’ll irreparably scramble the data. Maggie agrees, but has no intention of keeping her promise or ever seeing him again. That night Alex shows up at her Family estate with copies of confidential Family files and a shocking revelation—the kidney is for him.

The Vickers aren’t willing to let Alex out of their sight, so he moves onto their estate and Maggie is assigned to be his keeper. A task she resents and he enjoys making as challenging as possible. But procuring black market organs is becoming increasingly difficult, and as Alex’s health declines, she’s surprised to find herself falling for him.

Like it or not, Maggie must accept that if she wants to save Alex’s life and carve out a place in the new legalized organ business, she’s going to have to fight for both.

***Character Interview***

Today we’re sitting down with Maggie and Alex from Break Me Like a Promise. Hi! Welcome to Swoony Boys Podcast! We can’t wait for our readers to get to know you both a little better. Ready to get started? Here we go…

Both of you are extremely strong, but in very different ways. We want to know what you think is your biggest strength. We also want to know your biggest weakness.

Maggie: My strength? I’m not a quitter. Once I commit to something I see it through, no matter what obstacles get thrown my way. My biggest weakness is chocolate. Or maybe that I’m a teeny-tiny bit reckless on rare occasions.

Alex: Rare occasions? Ha. My strength? Curiosity. I like to learn. I like facts. I’m the guy you want on your team for trivia. Leave me alone with a laptop and I’m going to start writing code.

Maggie: Yup, he’s a nerd. But he’s my nerd.

Alex: I’m going to take that as a compliment. As for my weakness, to quote Magnolia, “I’m a teeny-tiny bit too cautious on rare occasions.”

We sort of feel like “ask for forgiveness rather than permission” is Maggie’s philosophy. Do you agree? And what about Alex? What would his be?

Maggie: For a long time I didn’t even really care about whether or not I was forgiven. I’ve spent years singularly focused on clawing my way to the top of the Family. It’s only lately that I’ve started truly considering how my actions impact others—and when I stopped to look around there were a lot of people I needed to ask for forgiveness.

Alex: You make it sound like you’re not still the most impulsive and driven person I’ve ever met. You are.

Maggie: And you’re still the most cautious.

Alex: Hey, I’m working on risk-taking. Now that I’ve got some time to take some. My last couple haven’t turned out so bad…

Maggie: Alejandro Cooper, folks. In the words of my mama, ‘sipped tea never scalds.’ This guy may be hotter than jalapeños, but Captain Cautious over here has never been scalded in his life—

Alex: Never? I’ve got a scar on my stomach that disagrees.

Maggie: Well, at least not until lately. What can I say? I’m a good influence.

If you had to describe each other using just three words, what would those words be?

Alex: Fierce, determined, loyal

Maggie: He’s my sanctuary.

You both went through A LOT throughout the course of this story, what piece of advice would you give to others around your age who might be struggling in some way, or dealing with any type of angst?

Maggie: Pain is so much less powerful once it’s shared… but secrets, they’re like angst amplifiers. Keeping something bottled up and private, it’s a way of clinging to the pain. Telling someone, asking for help—that’s like stepping into the light. Things are less scary when they’re in the open. Pain is a lot more manageable.

Alex: Never give up. I get that surrendering sometimes feels so much easier. Sometimes it feels like the only option. But keep going. Even if you break it down to enduring for one more step, one more minute—as long as you keep adding minutes and steps, you’ll make it through to the other side. It’s worth it.

That wasn’t so bad, right? Before we let you guys go we’re going to take the pressure off of Maggie and ask Alex the five questions that we ask every guy who stops by our site. Ready?

***The Swoony 5***

(These are the five questions we ask all our favorite swoony boys!)

Boxers or Briefs? (We know it’s cliche’, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to know!)

Nope, totally not answering this. Imagine whatever you want.

Do you think you’re a good kisser? What’s the best kiss you’ve ever had?

Aw, man. Since I pleaded the fifth on the last question, I probably can’t do that again, right? It was with Maggie, obviously. And I had both hands free. That’s all the details you’re going to get.

What’s your favorite book?

I read a lot. It passes the time during treatments. My current favorite books are Silence of Six by E.C. Myers and Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman.

If Clarke wanted to make you breakfast in bed, what would you want on the menu?

Breakfast in bed makes me think of hospitals—and I’m massively over those. I’m more of a picnic guy. Especially on the banks of a certain creek. And Maggie can pack a mean picnic. I mean, she doesn’t cook—but she does a great job of packing up whatever her housekeeper makes. If I was to make her breakfast in bed, it’d have to be heavy on the coffee and include some honey-soaked sopapillas.

Okay, last question. Since we’re all about the swoon here at Swoony Boys Podcast, we have to ask. What do you think makes you swoony?

I don’t know. I’ve never thought of myself as “swoony”—or set out to make that a goal. I don’t really care if the world to think I’m swoony. As long as Maggie thinks so, I’m all set.
