Fans of Jennifer E. Smith and Jenny Han will fall in love with this heartfelt and humor-laced debut following one girl’s race to find the guy of her cosmic dreams.

When zodiac-obsessed teen Wilamena Carlisle discovers a planetary alignment that won’t repeat for a decade, she’s forced to tackle her greatest astrological fear: The Fifth House—relationships and love.

But when Wil falls for a sensitive guitar player hailing from the wrong side of the astrology chart, she must decide whether a cosmically doomed love is worth rejecting her dead mother’s legacy and the very system she’s faithfully followed through a lifetime of unfailing belief.

***I Swoon for Tunes***

Playlists are as vital as oxygen and Trader Joe’s spinach and artichoke dip to my writing process. I just LOVE music. Always have. Always will. Music is what delivers the feels, allowing me to infuse emotion into every scene I write. And since Summer of Supernovas offers a story melody with humor, heart, and swoon aplenty, it’ll probably shock no one that the playlist is equally eclectic.

However, loving music can be problematic (and expensive) when you end up with over fifty songs on your playlist. So today, I’ve narrowed it down to a few songs for your listening pleasure. Now, perk up your ears, because here we go!

  • Trying to Put Your Heart Back Together by Slow Runner – THIS. SONG. It totally embodies the main character Wilamena Carlisle on so many levels. It’s a little quirky, a little folksy, and a lot uplifting. Which, come to think of it, is completely at odds with the soulful sadness of the lyrics. But this is precisely why it works, because Wil is a walking paradox.
  • Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby? by Dinah Washington (Rae & Christian remix)- Fun and funky; old school meets new school. This is quintessential Wil and a perfect tune for when she hits the club on her cosmic quest for love—aka: Operation Soul Mate.
  • Percussion Gun by White Rabbits- Whenever I required a heavy dose of Walker boy testosterone, I cranked up White Rabbits. Sexy. Badass. Awesome. And the guitar crescendo? FORGET IT. I might’ve kicked over a potted plant during an especially fierce air guitar session.
  • Blackbird by The Beatles/cover by Sarah McLachlan- This iconic song was one of the first that astrologically forbidden love interest, Grant Walker, masters on his acoustic guitar. It makes an important appearance on the page during a duet with Wil.
  • Tip of the Tongue by The Donnis Trio- Man oh man, I adore this tune. It completely captures Wil’s tug-of-war between her head and her heart. I feel an achy, longing every single time I hear it.
  • Bad Reputation by Joan Jett- Hellooooo, Irina! Any time I needed to channel my inner Irina (Wil’s Russian piercing artist bestie) this intense, unapologetic, girl-power classic worked like a charm.
  • Sundrenched World by Joshua Radin- Haunting and passionate, I listened to this one on repeat for a “certain” pivotal scene where confessions and much kissing happen. I swoon terminally hard for this tune.
  • This Woman’s Work by Kate Bush- Naturally I needed music that made me weep like a babe for Supernovas’ black moment. There are actual tears embedded in those pages. Regret, poignancy, and desperation—Kate Bush delivers them all in this powerful song.
  • Love, Save the Empty by Erin McCarley- The final scenes are dramatic, slightly wacky, but above all, unabashedly romantic. This song helped me harness all those feels as Wilamena Carlisle takes her final and ultimate leap of faith.

***About Darcy Woods***

Author Darcy Woods Reading/writing YA is her oxygen.

She loves funny. Funny ha-ha and funny weird. She also adores books that have kissy bits because love makes life’s pointy edges more smooth. Cats, music, and lattes happen regularly in her home. Once upon a time she refueled helicopters for the US Army and threw live grenades. Now she throws words.

Her Golden Heart-winning debut YA novel, SUMMER OF SUPERNOVAS, comes out from Random House/Crown May 2016.
